Fleet Personnel
Naval Enlisted
Naval enlisted personnel will adhere to the following rank structure, insignias, and payscale:
Recruit (SR/E1) – No Insignia, No Rating
Apprentice (SA/E2) Insignia: The enlisted rank of E2 will wear a black patch with a double half-chevron, starboard side high. Half-chevrons will be dark gray in color.
Rating: No Rating
Seaman (SN/E3) Insignia: Enlisted rank of E3 will wear a black patch with a triple half-chevron, starboard side high. Half-chevrons will be dark gray in color.
Rating: No Rating
Petty Officer Third Class (PO3/E4) Insignia: Enlisted rank of E4 will wear a black patch with a triple half-chevron, starboard side high. Additionally, E4 will have a single vertical line down the center of the triple half-chevron. Both half-chevrons and vertical line will be compliant with the existing rating structure for color.
Rating: Rating will be displayed in dark gray in the negative space above and port of the half-chevrons.
Petty Officer Second Class (PO2/E5) Insignia: Enlisted rank of E5 will wear a black patch with a triple half-chevron, starboard side high. Additionally, E5 will have a double vertical line down the center of the triple half-chevron. Both half-chevrons and vertical lines will be compliant with the existing rating structure for color.
Rating: will be displayed in dark gray in the negative space above and port of the half-chevrons.
Petty Officer First Class (PO1/E6) Insignia: Enlisted rank of E6 will wear a black patch with a triple half-chevron, starboard side high. Additionally, E6 will have a triple vertical line down the center of the triple half-chevron. Both half-chevrons and vertical lines will be compliant with the existing rating structure for color.
Rating: will be displayed in dark gray in the negative space above and port of the half-chevrons.
Naval Chief Petty Officers
Chief Petty Officer (CPO/E7) Insignia: Enlisted rank of E7 will wear a black patch with a triple chevron, in a V formation. Additionally, E7 will have a single horizontal line, centered on the triple chevron. Both chevrons and horizontal lines will be compliant with the existing rating structure for color.
Rating: will be displayed in dark gray in the negative space above and center of the chevrons.
Senior Chief Petty Officer (SCPO/E8) Insignia: Enlisted rank of E8 will wear a black patch with a triple chevron, in a V formation. Additionally, E8 will have a double horizontal line, centered on the triple chevron. Both chevrons and horizontal lines will be compliant with the existing rating structure for color.
Rating: will be displayed in dark gray in the negative space above and center of the chevrons.
Master Chief Petty Officer (MCPO/E9) Insignia: Enlisted rank of E9 will wear a black patch with a triple chevron, in a V formation. Additionally, E9 will have a triple horizontal line, centered on the triple chevron. Both chevrons and horizontal lines will be compliant with the existing rating structure for color.
Rating: will be displayed in dark gray in the negative space above and center of the chevrons.
Additional Notice: Command Master Chief Petty Officers will receive a single, five pointed star colored by rating protocol instead of their rating insignia.
Naval TechniciansCommand has authorized the addition of Technician rankings, as a side promotion track for Enlisted personnel who wish to further hone their skill sets, rather than pursuing a command track. When SN/E3 personnel are eligible for promotion to PO3/E4, they will have the opportunity to pursue the Technician track rather than the Command track. Those that choose the Command track over the Technician track will receive a 10% pay increase to compensate for their additional responsibilities.
Technician Apprentice (TA/E4) Insignia: TA/E4 will wear a black patch with a T centered in the negative space. T will be color coordinated according to the current rating structure.
Rating: will be displayed in the negative space, port and down of the T.
Technician Third Class (T3/E5) Insignia: T3/E5 will wear a black patch with a T centered in the negative space. Additionally, T3/E5 will have a single half-chevron, centered on the T. T and single half-chevron will be color coordinated according to the current rating structure.
Rating: will be displayed in the negative space, port and down of the T.
Technician Second Class (T2/E6) Insignia: T2/E6 will wear a black patch with a T centered in the negative space. Additionally, T2/E6 will have a double half-chevron, centered on the T. T and double half-chevron will be color coordinated according to the current rating structure.
Rating: will be displayed in the negative space, port and down of the T.
Technician First Class (T1/E7) Insignia: T1/E7 will wear a black patch with a T centered in the negative space. Additionally, T1/E7 will have a triple half-chevron, centered on the T. T and triple half-chevron will be color coordinated according to the current rating structure.
Rating: will be displayed in the negative space, port and down of the T.
Senior Technician (ST/E8) Insignia: ST/E8 will wear a black patch with a T centered in the negative space. Additionally, ST/E8 will have a single star, centered on the T. T and star will be color coordinated with the current rating structure.
Rating: ST/E8 does not wear a rating marker, in favor of the color coordination.
Master Technician (MT/E9) Insignia: MT/E9 will wear a black patch with a T centered in the negative space. Additionally, MT/E9 will have a double star, centered and splitting on the T. T and stars will be color coordinated with the current rating structure.
Rating: MT/E9 does not wear a rating marker, in favor of the color coordination.
Naval Commissioned OfficersCommand has authorized the removal of the Lieutenant Jr. Grade rank, and ranks will be consolidated. All officer ranks are to be worn as stand-alone elements on the collar of the uniform. When looked at the uniform from the front, ranks are to be worn on the port collar. Officers do not qualify for the rating system. On work or combat uniforms, all insignias will be black in color. On dress uniforms, all insignias will be silver in color.
Ensign (EN/O1) Insignia: EN/O1 will wear a single thin bar on the collar.
Lieutenant (LT/O2) Insignia: LT/O2 will wear two thick bars on the collar.
Lieutenant Commander (LCDR/O3) Insignia: LCDR/O3 will wear two thick bars with a single thin bar in between on the collar.
Commander (CDR/O4) Insignia: CDR/O4 will wear three thick bars on the collar.
Captain (CPT/O5) Insignia: CPT/O5 will wear four thick bars on the collar.
Admiral Third Class (A3/O6) Insignia: A3/O6 will wear a single 5 pointed star on the collar.
Admiral Second Class (A2/O7) Insignia: A2/O7 will wear two 5 pointed stars on the collar.
Admiral First Class (A1/O8) Insignia: A1/O8 will wear three 5 pointed stars in a triangular formation on the collar.
Marine Personnel
Marine EnlistedMarine enlisted personnel will begin usage of the rating system, based on their unit type: infantry, armor, artillery, and special forces. Command has authorized the removal of the Master Sergeant and Master Gunnery Sergeant ranks, as they are non-command track ranks.
Marine enlisted personnel will adhere to the following rank structure, insignias, and payscale:
Private (PVT/E1) Insignia: no insignia
Rating: no rating
Private First Class (PFC/E2) Insignia: The enlisted rank of E2 will wear a black patch with a double half-chevron, port side high. Half-chevrons will be dark red in color.
Rating: Rating will be above and starboard of the double half-chevron, based on the Marine’s unit type.
Lance Corporal (LCPL/E3) Insignia: The enlisted rank of E3 will wear a black patch with a triple half-chevron, port side high. Half-chevrons will be dark red in color.
Rating: Rating will be above and starboard of the double half-chevron, based on the Marine’s unit type.
Corporal (CPL/E4) Insignia: Enlisted rank of E4 will wear a black patch with a triple half-chevron, port side high. Additionally, E4 will have a single vertical line down the center of the triple half-chevron. Triple half-chevron and vertical line will be dark red in color.
Rating: Rating will be above and starboard of the double half-chevron, based on the Marine’s unit type.
Marine Sergeants
Sergeant (SGT/E5) Insignia: Enlisted rank of E5 will wear a black patch with a triple chevron, in a V formation. V will be dark red in color.
Rating: will be above and center of the V, based on the Marine’s unit type.
Staff Sergeant (SSGT/E6) Insignia: Enlisted rank of E6 will wear a black patch with a triple chevron, in a V formation. Additionally, E6 will wear a single horizontal line, centered on the V. V and horizontal line will be dark red in color.
Rating: will be above and center of the V and horizontal line, based on the Marine’s unit type.
Gunnery Sergeant (GSGT/E7) Insignia: Insignia: Enlisted rank of E7 will wear a black patch with a triple chevron, in a V formation. Additionally, E7 will wear a double horizontal line, centered on the V. V and horizontal lines will be dark red in color.
Rating: will be above and center of the V and horizontal lines, based on the Marine’s unit type.
First Sergeant (1SGT/E8) Insignia: Enlisted rank of E8 will wear a black patch with a triple chevron, in a V formation. Additionally, E8 will wear a triple horizontal line, centered on the V. V and horizontal lines will be dark red in color.
Rating: will be above and center of the V and horizontal lines, based on the Marine’s unit type.
Sergeant Major (SMAJ/E9) Insignia: Enlisted rank of E9 will wear a black patch with a triple chevron, in a V formation. Additionally, E9 will wear a triple horizontal line, centered on the V. Additionally, E9 will wear two stars on either side of the valley of the V. V and horizontal line will be dark red in color.
Rating: will be above and center of the V and horizontal line, based on the Marine’s unit type.
Marine Commissioned OfficersCommand has authorized the combination of First and Second Lieutenants into a single Ensign rank. Captain rank will be converted to Lieutenant. This is to better align with Naval Officer ranks. All officer ranks are to be worn as stand-alone elements on the collar of the uniform. When looked at the uniform from the front, ranks are to be worn on the port collar. Officers do not qualify for the rating system. On work or combat uniforms, all insignias will be black in color. On dress uniforms, all insignias will be dark red in color.
Ensign (EN/O1) Insignia: EN/O1 will wear a single thin bar on the collar.
Lieutenant (LT/O2) Insignia: LT/O2 will wear two thick bars on the collar.
Major (MAJ/O3) Insignia: MAJ/O3 will wear two thick bars with a single thin bar in between on the collar.
Lieutenant Colonel (LCOL/O4) Insignia: LCOL/O4 will wear three thick bars on the collar.
Colonel (CPT/O5) Insignia: CPT/O5 will wear four thick bars on the collar.
Naval Uniform Regulations
Enlisted
Class D - PT Uniforms Naval Enlisted will continue to be issued black sweatpants, black shorts, and dark gray t-shirt. Bottoms will have “Navy” printed on the right though. T-shirts will have their last name printed on the back, across the shoulder blades. T-shirts will have their ship’s emblem printed over the heart, and “Navy” printed on the left sleeve.
Class C - Work UniformsNaval Enlisted will continue to be issued dark blue jumpsuits for every-day work, as authorized by their Commanding Officer. Jumpsuits will have last name plate on the port side of the chest, when viewed from the front. Jumpsuits will have the ship’s emblem on the right sleeve. Rank insignia is to be displayed on the left sleeve.
Class B - Combat Uniforms Naval Enlisted will continue to be issued dark gray space digital camouflage pattern with passive light reflection. Name plate should be displayed on the port chest, when viewed from the front. Rank insignia is to be displayed on the left sleeve. Ship’s emblem is to be displayed on the right sleeve.
Class A - Dress Uniforms Naval Enlisted will continue to be issued black dress pants with a light gray dress jacket, trimmed in the corresponding color to the Sailor’s rating. Name plate should be displayed on the port chest, when viewed from the front. Rank insignia is to be displayed on the left sleeve. Ship’s emblem is to be displayed on the right sleeve. A sailor’s earned commendations should be worn on the starboard chest, in order received. For every three years of service, Sailors will receive a red half chevron to be worn at the bottom of the left sleeve. For every three years of outstanding service, Sailors will receive a gold half chevron to be worn at the bottom of the left sleeve.
